AMADA records drugs worth Rs 16 crores destroyed

Imphal, December 19 2011: In addition to uprooting 5588 poppy plants, AMADA has destroyed drugs worth Rs 16,86,39,318, claimed its secretary organisation K Meghachandra Meetei.

Speaking to media persons after releasing its annual report ahead of AMADA's sixth foundation day anniversary which falls on December 20, Meghachandra noted that there has been a spurt in poppy cultivation in the State since the last few years.

In the coming years, AMADA would be organising academic programmes and will focus its campaign on poppy cultivation.

Around 5588 poppy plants and poppy fruits worth Rs 16,76,50,000 were also destroyed.

A joint team of Narcotics Control Bureau, Narcotics Affairs of Border, 46 Assam Rifles and AMADA destroyed poppy plants worth around Rs 4.26 crores cultivated over 61 acres of land in New Saikot and Solpijang in Churachandpur district on January 15 .

Poppy plants cultivated on 25 acres of land on Kangchup hill range in Senapati district worth around Rs 1.65 crores were destroyed by NCB, 11 Gorkha Regiment and AMADA on January 29 and 30 this year.

On January 9, another joint team of AMADA and 1/11 Gorkha Rifles destroyed poppy plants cultivated in 68 acres of land Thingchom area of Churachandpur district whose monetary value was calculated to be around Rs 4.48 crores.

On February 18, poppy plants worth Rs 6.60 crores cultivated on 100 acres of land near Sijang village under Saikul sub-division of Senapati district were destroyed by a joint team of NCB, Customs Division Imphal and NAB, Saikul Police, 43 Assam Rifles and AMADA.

Taking serious note of the recent report on the presence of mobile factories for manufacturing heroin in Manipur, Meghachandra questioned the silence of the State Government to such alarming report.

In addition to seizing and pulling up intoxicants and drugs as well as drug abusers and peddlers, AMADA organised extensive academic awareness programmes in schools during the current year.

Several rounds of open discussions were also organised.

Since December 20, 2005 when AMADA was first set up till December 19, 2011, AMADA has destroyed drugs worth Rs 52,03,28,044.During this period, 5392 drug dealers and 3026 drug abusers were pulled up, he added.
