Imphal, September 18 2026: Shija Hospitals & Research Institute inaugurated Manipur's first Robotic-Assisted Surgery Unit, marking a significant milestone in the State's surgical care.

The unit is equipped with SSI Mantra 3, a Made-in-India robotic surgical system, bringing advanced robotic-assisted surgery closer to patients in Manipur and the North East.

Rajeev Singh Thakur, Chief Secretary; Sumant Singh, Commissioner, Health & Family Welfare; and Dr Palin Khundongbam, Chairman & Managing Director, Shija Hospitals attended the inauguration programme.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Jugindra Sorokhaibam, Director-Medical Services, Shija Hospitals, highlighted the introduction of robotic-assisted surgery as the latest step in Shija's continued advancement of specialised surgical care.

He demonstrated the operation of the robotic system in the operating theatre, and further highlighted that Shija has a well-trained and certified team of robotic surgeons, nurses and technicians to support the new surgical programme.

The development builds on Shija's longstanding surgical journey.

Having introduced keyhole surgery in Manipur in 1996, Shija has performed more than 44,000 keyhole surgeries.

Addressing the gathering, Rajeev Singh Thakur said that robotic-assisted surgery marks another significant chapter in Shija Hospitals' journey of surgical innovation.

He said the Tripura Government's decision to provide land for Shija Hospitals reflects the trust and credibility the institution has earned through its work.

He also appreciated the hospital's efforts to promote inclusive healthcare by taking medical services to remote and underserved areas through health camps.

Sumant Singh highlighted Shija's continued investment in technology and specialised healthcare.

He emphasised the importance of collaborative initiatives such as PMJAY in expanding access to quality healthcare.

A technical presentation on the SSI Mantra 3 robotic surgical system was delivered by Sourav Mondal, Clinical Engineer, SSI Mantra, covering its capabilities and potential patient benefits, including enhanced precision, visualisation and surgical dexterity.

Dr Palin Khundongbam described the milestone as a significant addition to Shija's specialised surgical capabilities and a reflection of its continued commitment to innovation.

He also highlighted healthcare and education as major economic outflows, stressing the need to strengthen these sectors within the region.

The consortium of banks, including Canara Bank, Indian Bank and NEDFI, was felicitated for its support.
