JNIMS does a samaritan act, cares for abandoned patient
Source: The Sangai Express

Imphal, April 18 2022: In an act of magnanimity, doctors and nurses of Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) have provided medical treatment to a 32-year old chronic liver disease patient Sofiokumar who has no one to attend to him.

Sofiokumar was admitted to JNIMS on March 30 by members of All Manipur Auto-Rickshaw Association.

When he was first admitted to the Male Medicine Ward of the hospital, a lady who identified herself as the spouse of Sofiokumar tended to his needs.

However, on April 6, the lady left the hospital without any prior notice and hasn't returned since.

From that day onwards, the doctors and nurses of JNIMS have been treating Sofiokumar as well as tending to all his needs.

JNIMS Director Professor Laishram Deben and Medical Superintendent Professor Kh Lokeshore visited Sofiokumar today at the Male Medicine Ward and examined his health condition.

Following this, Laishram Deben spoke to media persons and stated that when Sofiokumar was first admitted, they were informed that his surname was Chongtham and he hailed from Thangmeiband Yumnam Leikai.

He also admitted to having spent some time at a rehabilitation centre before, the Director added.

However, when the Director personally spoke with him today, he learned that Sofiokumar's surname was not Chongtham but Moirangthem.

His father's name was M Kumar and he hails from Nagamapal Paonam Leikai.

The inconsistencies in his surname and address aside, the most important thing right now is the issue that no one is stepping up to take care of Sofiokumar, Laishram Deben told media persons.

He added that JNIMS Medical Superintendent had also sent appeals to Imphal East district police and Imphal West district police to investigate and find information about Sofiokumar.

However, no solid answers have yet been found in this regard.

The lady who previously claimed to be Sofiokumar's spouse has also stopped receiving their calls, he added.

Further he shared that through True Caller, they learnt that the name associated with her mobile number was Sonia Watham.

Unfortunately, Sofiokumar's health condition continues to worsen, he said.

From April 6, the doctors and nurses of JNIMS have provided round the clock treatment to Sofiokumar along with taking care of all his needs.

Addressing his health status, he said that the patient has begun vomiting blood and they have detected the presence of blood in his stool as well.

Due to this, he was administered 2 bottles of blood and four units of frozen plasma.

He has also been provided with an oxygen cylinder and a monitor and presently requires about 4/5 bedsheet changes everyday, Laishram Deben continued.

As a result, he appealed to the relatives and friends of Sofiokumar to step up and visit the hospital, adding that they might regret it later on if anything unfortunate should befall Sofiokumar.
