While the students have been demanding the Government and the University to hold student union election for sometime, they had set December 16 as the deadline for the authorities to issue election notification.
After the authorities failed to issue the election notification as demanded, students in large numbers gathered in front of the Administrative Block of the varsity.
The students, after removing staff from inside the A-Block, locked it and announced that they were shutting down the University indefinitely.
A student of the DM College of Arts said the University has not held a student union election since the 2023-2024 academic session.
"We have been urging the authorities to hold the election of the student union for the academic session 2024-2025 .
Without an election, the University will not have a student union which is vital for the welfare of the students.
A student union is a must for the University to function smoothly," he said.
The students have met with authorities several times.
They have repeatedly submitted their demand to the authorities including the Vice Chancellor, Registrar and even to the Chief Minister and the Education Minister, he said.
"When we demanded the authorities to hold the election by December 10, the Government and the University authorities assured that they would issue election notification by December 16.Trusting the authorities, we suspended all agitations and were waiting for them to issue the notification," said the student.
Despite the assurance given, the authorities have not yet issued the election notification.
The University will be shut down until the notification is issued, he said.
