Concerns raised over 'dead' CCTV cameras

Imphal, April 16 2023: Some of the CCTV cameras installed for safety and security in Imphal city area seem to be not working.

These "probably dead cameras" are a problem and have somewhat undermined the initiatives being taken up to make Imphal, a smart city.

Remember, CCTVs are installed using money from the public exchequer for the safety and security of the people as well as private and public properties.

The cameras are instrumental in catching criminals and solving crimes.

CCTV cameras in some places of Imphal including Singjamei, however, seem to be not working and they are surely poorly maintained.

Kshetrimayum Amidson, the younger brother of a person who has been seriously injured in a hit-and-run case has asserted that CCTV cameras installed at Singjamei area are of no use as police have so far failed to arrest the driver of the vehicle who fled after hitting his brother.

Kshetrimayum Amidson hails from Singjamei Kshetri Leikai.

The incident happened on the night of March 4 at an area in Singjamei where there were CCTV cameras installed, said Ksh Amidson.

His elder brother, Ksh Rajesh (35) is receiving treatment at Shija Hospital and is yet to regain consciousness.

Amidson has even questioned if the CCTV cameras are installed for decorative purposes only.

If properly maintained, the CCTV cameras can be used to identify and track the culprits.

However, police are not able to identify and track the persons involved in the case.

He maintained that CCTV cameras should be maintained properly to deter crimes and provide safety and security to the public.
