Imphal, December 15 2025: The trash dumped in the underpass of the flyover in front of Cheirap Court remains uncleared even though it has been festering for a week.

Recently, The Sangai Express carried a report on it on the December 10 edition of the paper.

Though fenced sections in the underpass have been adorned with flowers and plants in an obvious attempt at beautification, numerous plastic refuse and other wastes continue to be dumped along its sides.

This unassigned rubbish dump is located in the heart of Imphal City which sees dense crowds daily.

This, coupled with the refuse remaining uncleared for a prolonged period, is proving to be a huge nuisance to passers-by who are assaulted with the stench, making it difficult to travel along this stretch.

Recently, the city underwent a "makeover" in anticipation of President Droupadi Murmu's two-day visit to the State on December 11 and 12 .

Ironically, the trash under the flyover bridge which has been collecting since December 8 remains untouched even after a week has passed! .

Even as the problem of uncleared garbage remains unresolved, people with questionable civic sense have not stopped discarding their household wastes here, adding to the piles of trash.

Perhaps this pattern reflects their belief that the collection and disposal of garbage is the sole responsibility of the Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC) .

However, the relevant authorities and the police need to address this unchecked prevalence of dumping garbage in public places and penalise the perpetrators.

According to a few passers-by, not only does it smell bad but vehicles end up running over some of the trash, scattering them even more on the road.

Speaking to The Sangai Express, they admitted to being pleased upon seeing flowers planted in the underpass.

But this beautification effort serves no purpose and holds no meaning when garbage continues to be dumped and piled right next to it.

"Those responsible for discarding wastes here are inconsiderate and thoughtless.

There needs to be a move to collectively prohibit such senseless garbage disposal practices.

Only when the public develops civic sense can Imphal City have a hope of being a clean city.

It would be unwise to leave this responsibility solely to the Government and its relevant departments", they said.
