Tension grips CCpur, police station attacked

Barely 24 hours after Prime Minister Narendra left the State after addressing two public rallies at Churachandpur and Imphal, a tense situation has gripped Churachandpur district headquarters.
Tension erupted in the district headquarters this afternoon when a group of people demanded unconditional release of all the individuals who were arrested by police for vandalising structures and decorations made for the Prime Minister's visit.
Demanding unconditional release of the detainees, the protesters attacked Churachandpur police station.
They destroyed the main entrance gate and several Government properties inside the police station.

Compelled by the situation, security personnel fired some rounds of bullets in the air to disperse the unruly mob.
According to the sources, some civil society organizations and angry protesters of Churachandpur town had demanded unconditional release of the arrested persons before 12 noon today.
At around noon, protesters gathered at Churachandpur town.
Soon after, they forced all the shops and business establishments to shut and started shouting slogans demanding immediate release of the arrested persons without any condition.
The protesters marched toward Churachandpur police station with their demand and pelted stones and fired slingshots toward the security personnel and the police station.
The protesters then blocked the entire road leading toward Churachandpur police station by placing hard objects and burning tyres in the middle of the road.
Additional security forces who reportedly rushed to the spot soon after the incident were also attacked by the protesters with Stones and other hard objects Report of scuffle between security personnel and protesters was also reported in some areas.
The unruly protesters took out all the iron barricades placed by police along the road and pushed them back upto Churachandpur police station.
Amid the violent protest, some police officers of Churachandpur district police went toward the protesters and talked with them to bring the situation under control but the protesters stuck to their demand for immediate release of the arrested individuals without any condition.
The situation turned ugly after a large number of protesters coming from different directions gathered on the roads leading toward Churachandpur police station with an intention to storm the police station.
At around 5 pm, protesters stormed Churachandpur police station and vandalized its main entrance gate and other properties kept in the complex of the Churachandpur police station.
The worsening situation compelled security personnel to fire some rounds of bullets in the air to disperse the unruly mob.
As the security personnel swung into action, the unruly mob fled from the spot.
But they pelted stones and fired slingshots toward the security personnel from some distance away.
The situation was still tense and confrontation was on till the time of filing this report.
Additional security personnel have rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control.
Notably, a mob vandalized structures and decorations made for the Prime Minister's visit on September 11, two days before the scheduled visit.
Subsequently, some individuals were taken into custody by security personnel for their involvement in the violent act.
Some of them were reportedly released after proper verification and a few of them were kept in custody after registering a suo moto case against them for necessary legal action/procedure.
