Imphal, September 11 2024:
Condemning the destruction of valuable properties during a protest at Uripok in the evening yesterday, the Uripok Apunba Lup (UAL) has appealed to one and all to not organise any protest late in the evening at Uripok side without consulting them first.
Speaking to the media at Manipur Press Club today, general secretary of UAL Samom Dhruba said that the protest at Uripok yesterday was participated by people from other places too and they were violent.
He continued that the protesters destroyed both private and public properties at Uripok yesterday including residential gates, CCTv cameras, plastic bottle banks, plants grown on the road median etc and the same was condemnable.
Destroying private and public properties during a protest was absurd and senseless, Dhruba said.
Saying that they also have been taking part in the movement to safeguard Manipur, he expressed desire for the people to stage a protest democratically if they want to air their grievances.
"Uripok road leads to RIMS and SHIJA Hospitals and so we have been making sure there is no obstruction in the movement of people who need treatment," he added.
Further stating that a machine used in blacktopping roads was set ablaze after it pushing towards the overbridge apart from destroying several street lamps along the Uripok road, he added that miscreants taking part in a protest in inebriated condition and destroying private and public properties ought to be condemned.
UAL supports the agitation of students but protesters resorting to violence is condemnable, he said.
Dhruba went on to say that UAL was also involved in taking the injured students to hospital yesterday apart from providing shelter to students from far flung areas at different community halls in Uripok and in sending them to their homes safely.
People have the right to protest and air their grievances democratically, he maintained while asking one and all to consult them in advance if they want to stage a protest at Uripok.
