Biswajit calls for conservation of wildlife, biodiversity

Forest and Environment Minister Thongam Biswajit has said that a collective effort is needed to protect wildlife and biodiversity.
The Minister also said that it is the responsibility of human responsibility to respect and protect wildlife and biodiversity as cohabitants of the environment.
Th Biswajit attended the observance of 67th Wildlife Week at Manipur Zoological Garden , Iroisemba, today as a chief guest.
Saying that conserving wildlife and diversity is closely associated with "our religion, culture and tradition," he maintained that a comprehensive research must be conducted on conserving wildlife and their habitats.
Expressing concern over the extinction of many species of wildlife and plants in Manipur, the Forest Minister said that the Government has initiated measures to protect and increase the number of Sangai, the State animal of Manipur.

"To conserve endangered species of plants and animals, we have to develop proper habitats for them as human can't survive on its own," he noted.
Hiyanglam AC MLA Dr Yumnam Radheshyam, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests cum Head of Forest Force Dr Aditya Kumar Joshi and Additional PCCF Soreiphy Vashum also attended the programme as presidium members.
"My Fair Lady Comes to Animal Garden," a book written by Environmentalist Dr Kh Shamungou was also released during the function.
Prizes were distributed to Laishram Samungou of The Sangai Express who won the first place in the recent State level wildlife photography contest while State level Wildlife Protection Incentive Awards 2022 were conferred to three NGOs - Wildlife Explorers Manipur, Soibam Leikai; Unique Wildlife Protection Committee, Sekmaijin Makha Leikai and Environmental Social Reformation and Sangai Protection Forum, Keibul Lamjao and individuals- Rahul Ashem from Yaiskul Hiruhunba Leikai; Anish Ahmed from Kwakta Ward no 7 and Mutum Manikanta from Karam Awang Leikai.
