Four listed for lifetime achievement

Imphal, August 08 2026: The Research Institute of Science and Technology (RIST) has named four scientists from Manipur for its RIST Lifetime Achievement Award 2026 .

Dr Thangjam Dhabali, chief consultant pathologist and managing director, BABINA Diagnostics; Moirangthem Dhaneshwar, former Professor of Chemistry, Manipur University; Thiyam Jekendra, former Professor of Physics, MU and Waikhom Vishwanath, former Professor of Life Sciences, MU were selected for the lifetime achievement award during the second executive council meeting of RIST held on July 24, 2026 at Centenary Hall, MU .

The awards will be presented at a ceremony which will be held on the 16th foundation day of RIST on October 4, 2026, said a press release issued by RIST information and public relations secretary Dr Raheijuddin Sheikh (Shamu) .

According to the press release Dr Thangjam Dhabali Singh, a distinguished pathologist and healthcare entrepreneur, transformed the medical landscape of the Northeast by establishing BABINA Diagnostics-the region's first NABL-accredited laboratory-and Manipur's first comprehensive cancer treatment centre, the AOI-BABINA Speciality Hospital.

He was conferred the prestigious Order of the Rising Sun - Gold & Silver Rays by the Government of Japan in 2020 .

Prof Moirangthem Dhaneshwar Singh, a gold-standard scholar from Banaras Hindu University and a visiting fellow at Princeton University and Okayama University, is revered for his work in stereochemistry and for steering Manipur University to its prestigious A Grade NAAC accreditation during his tenure as Dean and Vice-Chancellor-in-Charge.

Prof Thiyam Jekendra Singh is celebrated for his groundbreaking theoretical work on thermal transport in solids, published in Physical Review B, which was later validated by Stanford University.

He holds the unique distinction of being the first academic in North East India to introduce a special paper on Non-linear Dynamics in the MSc Physics curriculum.

Prof Waikhom Vishwanath Singh, a globally recognized ichthyologist, has discovered and described 100 new species of freshwater fishes from the Eastern Himalaya.

He served as the Lead Author for the IUCN Red List chapter on the region's freshwater fishes and was honoured with the EK Janaki Ammal National Award for Animal Taxonomy by the Government of India.
