4 killed, 6 injured in road mishap

Ukhrul, March 08 2025:
Four persons were killed and six others were injured when a Bolero Camper fell into a deep gorge near Challou river along the inter-village road between Poi village and Awangkasom, under Chingai block, Ukhrul.
According to sources, ten persons including the driver of the vehicle were coming from Poi towards Nungbi village to attend a felicitation programme when the fatal mishap happened today at around 12:30 pm.
Four persons died on the spot while six injured were rushed to Ukhrul District Hospital.
The deceased have been identified as Martha Alungnao, Yureichon Nirai, Peacenao Raising and Mazanthei Maluksho, who was driving the vehicle.
The six injured have been identified as Shangreihao A' Shimray, Ngachonwon RS, Kashangmi Shimray, Chihanngam Bukli, Chonteishon M Shimray (female) and Ngayailei Shatsang (female), all from Poi village.
Three of the six injured have been taken to Imphal for further treatment and their conditions sare said to be critical.
Meanwhile, the president of Raphei Katamnao Long (RKL) Paomi Khaveishang has expressed solidarity with the bereaved families and the injured persons.
Paomi maintained that the deplorable condition of the PMGSY road from Awangkasom to Poi village has become a major safety concern for commuters.
The unfortunate road accident could have been averted if there were regular maintenance of the road by the authorities concerned, Paomi said.
The inter-village road which is a vital connectivity for the border villages has been abandoned for long, Paomi said, urging the State Government to conduct immediate reassessment and repair the road to meet safety standards.
