Imphal, September 07 2025:
After an alleged unintentional shooting incident in Senapati's Laii village was given different interpretations in the media, the Naga Journalists Union Manipur (NJUM) has conducted a fact-finding inquiry.
Hornbill TV journalist Dip Saikia was reportedly hit by pellets from an airgun fired by one Reiveinii Ramai (26) at Laii village on August 30.Reiveinii Ramai (26) hails from Phuba Khuman village and is presently staying at Senapati.
Detailing the findings of its 3-member team, NJUM in a statement said Ramai was unaware of the presence of Saikia or anyone else while firing the air-gun.
The incident happened during rainy and foggy weather conditions.
The villagers only learned about the incident when Saikia was brought to the Laii Primary Health Centre for first aid.
Ramai had voluntarily gone to the Laii PHC after learning Saikia was shot.
He had apologized to Saikia in the presence of village authority council members and the village headman.
He had also shown his willingness to assist while Saikia underwent treatment.
An FIR under Section 109/117 of BNS and 25 (1C) of Arms Act was filed with the Tungjoy police station on August 31, 2025 .
NJUM said the 3-member fact finding team was formed to verify the story.
The team went to Laii under Tungjoy police station, Senapati district and met with the police, village leaders and also visited the place where Dip Saikia was shot.
The fact-finding team also spoke with Ramai who was in police custody, and Saikia who was undergoing treatment at Guwahati over the phone.
The fact-finding report is by no means the final verdict but a means to verify the story.
NJUM is aware that the investigation is still going on and it is willing to cooperate with anybody who wishes to further verify the incident, said the journalists' union.
Blatant use of weapons in public places that has the potential to cause extensive harm, and even cause death is condemned.
However, a fair and just investigation to verify the facts of the incident and book all responsible person(s) is highly necessary, said NJUM .
