Imphal, June 07 2024:
Around 120 flood affected people from Laipham Khunou are currently living along the roadside to the west of Khuman Lampak in makeshift tarpaulin shelters.
Speaking to The Sangai Express, Maibam Rakesh from Laipham Khunou Makha Leikai said that on May 28, the riverbank ruptured at Salanthong, Kairang Awang Leikai and Ahallup and people fled in hordes to safer ground.
He complained that other flood affected victims have been put up in relief camps at Khuman Lampak Youth Hostel and City Convention Centre, Palace Compound but the people of Laipham Khunou are left helpless as Laipham Khunou was excluded from the list of places set to receive emergency aid in the face of this natural calamity in an order issued by the State Government.

With some of their own money, they purchased tarpaulin sheets and set up makeshift living quarters along the roadside where 120 people are currently living.
Initially, they did not have any toilet facilities, but now two toilets each for men and women have been set up, he maintained.
Highlighting some of their hardships, he said that due to lack of privacy, women and children at the makeshift shelter suffer a lot of inconveniences.
With no help, the people have to take care of their own medical ailments, he added.
About 5 days after the flood began, Imphal East SDO visited the makeshift shelter and compiled a report.
Relevant authority from Heingang AC also distributed five bags of rice, one bag of potatoes, one bag of onions and cooking oil.
Following this, 5 kg of rice were distributed to each household.
Aside from these, no help has come from the Government, he lamented.
