Imphal, August 05 2025:
The Zomi Council (ZC) has stated that any organization bearing the name "Kuki-Zo Council" would not be welcomed in areas inhabited by the Zomi community, specifically within Churachandpur district.
The Council, in a press release which accuses the Kuki-Zo Council of implementing a divisive agenda, said that it will always stand with its nine constituent tribes and safeguard their security, dignity and well-being.
Stating that the term "Kuki-Zo" was rejected as a legitimate identity during its general assembly on May 11 last year, the ZC urged the Government to understand and respect the Zomi people's sense of ownership over their 'ancestral land' .
The ZC demanded that the Kuki-Zo Council operate and establish offices only in areas where they are accepted to ensure their future security and comfort.
Deploying armed guards in residential areas citing insecurity on fictitious ground pose a direct threat to the security and well-being of innocent bystanders and the general public, the ZC reasoned.
Further stating that delegates from Churachandpur who criss-crossed the Imphal valley were escorted by the Assam Rifles for a meeting in Kangpokpi on July 29 'to prop up a ragtag group of dissidents into a puppet and pliable formation', the Council added that the Assam Rifles also provided escort to the same delegation along National Highway 102B on August 4, 2025, enroute to Aizawl.
The divisive role played by the Assam Rifles in unduly favouring a particular civil society organisation has been duly noted and is deemed truly abominable, the Zomi Council further asserted.
The Central Government has invited a particular CSO from the hills to discuss the issue of reopening National Highways, the ZC said and emphasized that any discussion regarding the proper and public utilization of National Highway 2 and National Highway 102B must include the participation of the Zomi Council and its affiliated bodies 'without which any arrangement would be considered obsolete and untenable' .
