People's nagging suspicion of the involvement of some rogue police personnel in burglary cases at Singjamei and surrounding areas is gaining more weight following the disclosure of a burglar held by people while attempting to loot a shop at Singjamei Chirom Leikai.
Two persons were attempting to loot Fancy Station dealing in mobile phone handsets, accessories and recharge card vouchers last midnight but they had to flee as the locals raised an alarm.
Volunteers of Youth Convention Imphal, Singjamei Chirom Leikai also chased the burglars through unsuccessfully.
The local people together with the shop owner then checked the shop if anything was missing at about 3.30 am.
Even though no article was missing, they found a bag.
It contained pliers, mobile phone charger, lead storage battery used in two wheelers, two T-shirts and one half-empty of IMFL (Bagpiper).
In the meantime, a youth came to the shop asking for a Vodafone recharge voucher of Rs 10. Suspicious about the demeanour and attitude of the youth, the local people questioned him thoroughly in the course of which the youth confessed that he was among the persons who tried to break open the shop and that he was coming back to look for the bag.
At this revelation, the enraged volunteers subjected the accused to further questioning who was then identified as Huiningshungbam Suresh alias Abung (18) s/o Tomba of Chingamakha Kshetri Leikai.
Suresh disclosed that he and one Thingujam Somi (18) of Heirangoithong were attempting to burgle the shop.
He also admitted that they were involved in looting goods worth around Rs 12 lakhs from Achy Cassette Gallery, Singjamei Super Market in the intervening night of July 28 and 29.Mobile phone handsets looted from Achy Cassettee Gallery were kept at the house of one L Basanta (41) of Utlou but staying at Chingamakha Ningthoujam Leikai who is a Nat Sankritan drummer.
The local people then rounded pull up Basanta too and handed over to CADA together with Suresh.
They were later taken into the custody of Singjamei Police.
Suresh further disclosed that Sarat, Jiten, Roshan and an unknown man was involved in looting Achy Cassette Gallery.
