As in other part of the globe, International Day of Older Persons was also observed in Manipur today during a function organised by Pioneer Health Club, Manipur at Press Club here.
Honouring senior citizens with gifts and other presentations were the main highlights of the observance held under the theme of 'Rights of older persons'.
In December 1991, United Nations adopted a resolution for observing October 1 every year as the International Day of Older Persons with the main objective of ensuring their rights to independence, participation, care, fulfilment and dignity.

The function was attended by MP Rishang Keishing as chief guest, president of Pioneer Health Club Dr Soubam Bapu Singh as functional president and former Health and Education Minister Gangumei Kamei as guest of honour.
Health Director W Motilal and RTI activist L Ibomcha were among the resource persons who spoke at the occasion.
In appreciation of their contribution to the society in various fields inspite of their old age, eight senior citizens were honoured during the function.
They are A Halim Choudhury in administrative field, HN Amzathang in the field of tribal culture more particularly in the development of Paite literature and folksongs, noted artist Lourembam Pishak Devi, footballer L Fereng, Sorokhaibam Naran Singh in the field of performing arts, Taleping Rengbuta in the field of education, academician Elangbam Yaima Singh and noted painter and sculpture Brahmacharimayum Amusana Sharma.
The eight senior They were presented with citation, blanket, walking sticks, etc.
Speaking as chief guest of the function, Rishang Keishing observed that respect, care and participation in the decision making process are among the things that older persons like the most.
However, instances of neglecting elder persons by their own family members has been increasing all over the world including Manipur, he lamented.
Maintaining that elder persons are like visitors who are ready to embark on a long journey, Rishang Keishing exhorted the gathering to take care of the elder persons while they are living with them with love and respect.
Gangmumei Kamei pointed out the true character of a person can be known from the way he or she treat an elder person.
L Ibomcha stressed on creating wide-spread awareness on the welfare programmes being taken up by the Govt among all the people.
He also lamented over denial of rights of the elder persons with regard to benefits under old age pension and medical care.
Organiser of the function also presented mementos to all those individuals who have contributed financially towards the success of the observance.
