Textile park set to come up soon

In an endeavour to enable large-scale production of quality handloom and handicraft products of the State to meet markets demands, a Textile Park is set to come up soon in the State.
Vice-President of a Kolkata-based Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services Limited, Abhijit Som has landed in the State to take stock of the construction of the upcoming Textile Park.
ILFS is a project management consultant for the construction of the park.
Abhijit Som held a meeting with entrepreneurs today at Classic Hotel.
He also had a glimpse of the textile products and designs produced by State's entrepreneurs.
The park is said to be set up on 29/27 acre of land at Lamboi Khongnangkhong in Imphal West under the Ministry of Textile, Government of India.
90 percent of the total cost would be borne by the Ministry of Textile while the remaining 10 percent would be shared by entrepreneurs.
The Ministry is expected to release fund for the construction and infrastructure after the ILFS submitted a written report to the Government of India.
Talking to reporters at Hotel Classic here today, Deputy Director of the State's Commerce and Industries, K Lamlee Kamei said, it is anticipated that the ILFS would submit a detail project report to the Central Government within this month.
Though applications requesting a berth in the park have been received from as many as 38 departments, the exact number of berths to be allotted in the park is not yet decided, he said.
Stating that the handloom and handicraft products of the State are in high demand in markets across the world, the Deputy Director said the park has been initiated so that craftspersons and artists of the State get a platform to produce more in an organised way.
He said the components of the park would include handloom, powerloom, embroidery, training, packaging, export agency, hotel etc.
Lamlee further said that the ILFS had assured the completion of the park within two years.
He said the once if functional, the park would ease inconveniences in shortage of production and inability to meet market demand.
He added that the land for the park, acquired by the Department of Commerce and Industries, would soon be changed in the name of an association of entrepreneurs.
Meanwhile, a handloom design competition was held today at Hotel Classic under the aegis of Department of Commerce and Industries.Thirty three handloom clusters have participated in the competition in three categories.
In the handloom category, S Romola, L Pakpi and PG Abailu were placed in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd position respectively.
In the embroidery and handloom category, W Mandita, Ksh Meloroi and H Loidangtombi were adjudged the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes winners respectively.
K Robina won the first prize and third prizes in the handloom and costume category while M Manglem won the second prize in this category.
The prize included a cash award of Rs 20,000, 15000 and 10000 for 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes respectively in each category.
The programme was also attended by Principal Secretary of Commerce and Industries O Nabakumar, Director V Tualthang and Executive Director of ILFS Mumbai Ravi Raman.
