Fast Track Special Court No 1 Manipur on Wednesday sentenced one Md Abdul Rahman alias Ibomcha, who was convicted of sexual assault of a minor under Section 4 of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act 2012, to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment.
During the sentence hearing on Wednesday, convict Abdul Rahman (22) of Kwakta Khuman Mayai Leikai Ward No 4 was produced before the court.
The special PP said that the convict committed the most brutal and heinous crime on the then 14-year old girl, and as such prayed for maximum imprisonment, to which the defence council argued that Abdul (37) is father of four kids (two girls, two boys).
His father is 82 years old and he (Abdul) along with his elder sister and 12-year old nephew are taking care of the family.
As such, the counsel appealed to award the lightest sentence possible and prevent innocent people from being implicated.
The counsel also prayed for commuting the time Abdul spent in custody from November 17, 2013 to May 19, 2018 from the total sentence.
After perusing submissions of both parties, the court sentenced Abdul to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and ordered him to pay a fine of Rs 1 lakh.
In case he fails to pay a fine, he would have to stay in jail for one more year.
The court then ordered for the time Abdul spent in judicial custody to be commuted from the sentence.
It further ordered that the state government provide Rs 4 lakh compensation to the victim within 30 days as compensation to help in rehabilitation and treatment of her mental health.
