Kangpokpi, September 28 2024:
The two-day total shutdown called by the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU), Sadar Hills Kangpokpi which started on September 27 as well as the one day total shutdown called by Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM) in Kuki-dominated areas ended Saturday midnight without any untoward incident.
The total shutdown was imposed in protest against fake intelligence reports about influx of 900 Kuki militants from Myanmar into Manipur.
The government later retracted the claims, clarifying that the intelligence reports could not be substantiated on the ground.
During the shutdown, all types of business establishments and private institutions including schools, remained closed while vehicular movement, except for those exempted from its purview, was restricted in Sadar Hills, Kangpokpi district.
To maintain law and order, Kangpokpi police and newly deployed CRPF personnel were stationed along the National Highway 2 and monitored the protests to prevent any potential disturbances.
Kuki-Zo women actively participated in enforcing the total shutdown by gathering at Kangpokpi district headquarters and Gamgiphai.
