Imphal, November 26 2024:
The 76th Constitution Day observance organised by Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee Legal Department was held on Tuesday at Congress Bhawan, here.
Speaking on the occasion, former chief minister and CLP leader Okram Ibobi Singh remarked that dictatorship cannot survive in a democratic country, likening it to a fire on the brink of extinction.
He urged people of Manipur to unite and embrace the true spirit of democracy with the observance of the 75th Constitution Day.
He highlighted that whether it is the NDA-led government at the centre or the BJP-led government in the state, every party in power must adhere to the provisions of the Constitution.
"It is under the Constitution's provisions that elections are conducted, whether for MPs, MLAs or local bodies and failure to hold elections, constitutes violation of the Constitution," Ibobi said and called on the BJP government to clarify whether it is committed to upholding provisions of the Constitution of India.
According to the Congress leader, every citizen in a democratic country is entitled to myriad of rights, including criticising a dictatorial government.
"Currently, it appears that no law is being enforced in accordance with the Constitution of India in the state of Manipur.
Individuals who oppose the government, including political parties and journalists critical of the regime, are being suppressed," he alleged, adding that such actions are a direct violation of the Constitution of India.
"There is no denying the fact that a form of dictatorship is in existence in the state," Ibobi claimed.
The former chief minister also cautioned that in case the current situation continues, the people of the state must unite and voice their demand, declaring that a government unable to protect the lives and property of its citizens is unfit to rule.
The function was also attended by MPCC president K Meghachandra, CWC member Gaikhangam and INDIA bloc Manipur convenor Kh Shanta as members on the dais.
