AMBA protests excessive action against VVs

Imphal, February 25 2025: All Manipur Bar Association (AMBA) organised a sit-in protest on Tuesday in front of the Uripok Cheirap Court, condemning excessive use of force by security personnel against village volunteers (VVs).

Speaking on the sidelines of the protest, AMBA president Puyam Tomcha noted the recent proclamation by the Governor for surrender of illegal weapons but criticised alleged highhandedness by security personnel against village volunteers even few days remain before lapse of the deadline set to voluntarily deposit illegal weapons.

He also cautioned that such acts could lead to unwanted incidents in the future, and urged the Governor to address the issue, calling for immediate halt to the excessive actions of security forces and an extension of the deadline for the surrender of arms.

While acknowledging the Governor's efforts to restore peace and tranquillity in the state, Tomcha stated that public fear would abate, and trust could be rebuilt if the SoO cadres were confined in their respective camps, restricted from leaving, and their weapons securely stored in a common armoury.

A memorandum outlining the aforementioned points will be submitted to the Governor, to ensure that the Kuki militants strictly, adhere to the SoO guidelines, he added.
