Bishnupur, June 23 2025:
With Bishnupur district emerging as a hotspot for drug-related activities and associated crimes, the United Women's Development Organisation (UWDO), Bishnupur district, has announced plans to launch a massive anti-drug campaign beginning July 1 .
Addressing media persons on Monday, UWDO secretary RK Tombisana expressed suspicion of sale of intoxicants at roadside fast food stalls and hotels along the Phubala and Sendra stretches.
She noted a worrying rise in road accidents, fights, and other unwanted incidents involving youth returning from evening outings in these areas.
Tombisana said that the growing unrest among mothers over these issues has prompted the organisation to initiate a district-wide anti-drug drive, set to begin on July 1.She urged the district denizens to refrain from unnecessary celebrations and festivities, stating that this is not a time for rejoicing, especially when Bishnupur remains one of the worst affected districts in the ongoing crisis in Manipur.
"This is a time for reflection and resistance, not celebration," she said, urging people to wake up to the realities on the ground and think seriously about how to respond to the growing threat and injustice.
She stressed the need for public awareness and collective action, criticising the government's approach, particularly the forced disarmament of village volunteers defending their communities in the valley, while Kuki militants in the hills continue to operate freely with sophisticated weapons.
She further informed that a written application regarding the anti-drug initiative would be submitted to authorities concerned, adding that the campaign will be carried out in collaboration with CSOs, local clubs and other community-based organisations and meira paibi groups.
UWDO president Nepram Bimola, finance secretary Oinam Bina and other members were also present at the press briefing.
Meanwhile, as part of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan campaign, an awareness-cum-sensitisation programme was jointly organised by the Bishnupur district administration, and District Social Welfare Office at Leimaram Kangjeibung community hall on Monday.
