Imphal, March 19 2023:
Retired IAS RK Nimai has observed that there are almost no theatres left for performing folk-based plays due to varied reasons including lack of financial resources and audience.
He made the statement during a discourse organised at Hotel Castle, Konung Mamang on Sunday in connection with 6th Khundongbam Brojendro Theatre Festival, being held at JNMDA auditorium from March 18 to 23 .
Nimai, who is also the chairman of the Theatre Festival Committee, said that the presentation of folk-based plays will pave the way for its revival and popularisation among the young generations.
This is important, especially considering the dwindling audience for this particular theatrical genre.
The present theatre can be divided into two categories- contemporary based and social-based plays, he stated, while stressing the need to support and help strengthen the theatre movement in the state.
Regarding the Theatre Festival, Nimai said that the discourse was held to discuss the errors in the plays presented during the festival and further help in improving the same.
He then elaborated on the social-based plays by Brojendro, while urging all concerned for concerted efforts in improving the grandeur of the festival in the future.
