Licypriya to attend UN General Assembly

Imphal, September 18 2022: Ten-year old climate activist Licypriya Kangujam left for New York on Saturday to attend UN Transforming Education Summit at the 77th Session of United Nations General Assembly on the invitation of the UN Secretary General.

She is representing India and the voice of millions of children across the world in the highest level of decision making.

Mention may be made UNGA 77 opened on September 13, and will continue till September 20 under the theme "A watershed moment: Transformative solutions to interlocking challenges," to reflect many connected issues we face today including war in Ukraine, the energy and cost-of-living crisis, the COVID19 pandemic and humanitarian disasters caused by climate change.

While addressing media before her departure, she opined that instead of spending billions of dollars in wars, if such a minuscule amount it spent on fighting climate change, poverty can be eliminated and education be given to hundreds and thousands of children.

"Sacrificing the lives of millions of children for the failure of our leaders is unacceptable at any cost.

We want clean air to breathe, clean water to drink and clean planet to live," she said.

Licypriya is one of the leading voices for climate change in the world.

She is one of the youngest participants in this year's general assembly.

She will be returning back to India on September 26 after meeting several world leaders.
