Toddler swallows live Ngapemma fish, dies

In a tragic incident, a 10-month old baby boy was choked to death after swallowing a live Trichogaster fasciata (Ngapemma) at Khangabok Part-2 Meisnam Leikai, Thoubal district around 5.30 pm Tuesday.
The toddler was the only child of Khundongbam Menten of Khangabok Meisnam Leikai.
According to the family, the toddler's grandmother took him to a neighbour's house in the evening.
There, while she was responding to a phone call, the toddler grabbed one of the live Ngapemma fishes kept in the kitchen and swallowed the same in the dark.
Family members immediately rushed the toddler to Thoubal District Hospital to extract the fish but the doctor on duty referred him to Imphal for better treatment.
At RIMS, the doctors managed to extract the fish stuck in the toddler's throat.
However, the doctor declared that the toddler had already passed away.
