IIIT programme promotes Mother Tongue in education

Imphal, August 10 2025:
Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Manipur in association with Mylai Thiruvlluvar Tamil Sangam and Federation of International Thirukkur Forums of Thiruvallar Chair, Tamil Nadu Open University, Chennai organised a programme titled 'Empowering Education through Mother Tongue' at Swami Vivekananda auditorium, IIIT Manipur City Campus, Mantripukhri on Saturday.
The programme aimed at highlighting the vital role of mother tongue in education, in line with the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, was attended by Manipur University vice-chancellor Prof N Lokendra Singh, IIIT, Senapati director Prof Krishnan Baskar and MTS Academy, Chennai LTS Projects vice-chairman Dr Rajeswari Murugan as presidium members.

A quiz competition based on the programme theme 'Empowering Education through Mother Tongue' was organised with Rama Krishna Mission School bagging the first prize of Rs 5,000; Keishamthong High School second prize of Rs 4,000; and JNV Imphal West securing the third prize of Rs 3,000 .
The fourth and fifth prize of Rs 2,000 and Rs 1,000 went to JNV Bishnupur and Srivan Higher Secondary School, respectively.
A parallel quiz for BTech Engineering students was also conducted with the same prize amounts.
During the programme, Tamil Nadu Open University, Chennai VC Prof S Arumugam and BABINA Group of Companies chairman and MD Dr Thangjam Dhabali Singh were conferred Life-time achievement award.
Meanwhile, recipients of the Treasure Trove of Awards 2025 in the category of Knowledge include Manipur University Department of Life Sciences (Botany) Prof Ksh Lal Bihari Sharma and Kanyakgurukulam Women Welfare Trust, Tamil Nadu managing trustee Appakutty Vedarathinam; whereas winners in Art and Culture included writer and critic Dr Gurumayum Bijoykumar Sharma, Pena artiste, scholar and cultural practitioner Koijam Premkanta Meitei, artiste and performer Lansana Chanu Thokchom and writer Keithellakpam London.
In the afternoon session, school students attended screenings of documentary films on MK Binodini Devi, GC Tongbra, and Laishram Samarendra, offering valuable insights into Manipuri literary and cultural heritage.
