SP advises removal of modified silencers, tinted films

Imphal, April 08 2023: Imphal West SP Dr S Ibomcha has announced that legal action will be taken up against usage of modified silencer, a major cause of noise pollution and tinted films on window shields of vehicles in Imphal city area.

Addressing a press meet at his office in Babupara here on Saturday, Dr Ibomcha said that modified silencers affect pedestrians, especially senior citizens, in addition to causing noise pollution in the city.

To prevent the usage of modified silencers different police sta tions have been conducting drives in various areas of the district since March this year.

During the drive around 187 modified silencers have been seized, with Lamsang PS topping the list with 40 seizures till date, and ASIL Sarat of the Commando Unit topping the personnel list with 21 seizures under his belt.

As part of this drive, the district police had specified the transparency level of the tinted films installed on the window-shields, with the inside of the car to be visible from outside.

The usage of tinted films on car windows in the state, especially in Imphal city is one of the major causes of crimes including drug abuse and others.

Thus, anyone found using tinted films well below the legal transparency limit were detained.

In March, around 345 vehicles were detained for the same.

After the seizure of modified silencers, the district police made the owners call their respective parents/families for reinstalling the company provided silencers, while those detained with tinted films were made to understand not to repeat such acts in the future, the SP conveyed.

Dr Ibomcha continued that as part of the drive, Lamphel PS seized 17 modified silencers, Singjamei PS 10, City PS 14, Imphal PS 21, Sekmai PS 9, Patsoi PS 9, Mayang Imphal PS 2, Wangoi PS 27, Lamsang PS 26 and Imphal West commando unit 219 (totalling up to 354) in March alone.

Appropriate legal actions were taken up in the matter, he added.

Informing that the district police will continue to carry on the drive, the officer said that violators will be liable for punishment or a fine under Section 52 of Motor Vehicle Act, 1988.He then urged motorcyclists particularly the Bullet riders not to use modified silencers, while also urging anyone wanting to use tinted films on their car windows to first seek permission with a written request from the Home Department and the Committee concerned.

As the Police Department has been unable to provide mass awareness in this regard, those detained during the drive in March were let go after strict warning.

Meanwhile, the district police conducted drives at shops selling modified silencers and also at workshops, instructing them not to continue such illegal works again, the SP further informed.

The press briefing was attended by top police officers of the district, offi-cers-in-charge of police stations in the district and commando units.
