New board of directors of AWAS elected

Manipur Apex Handloom Weavers & Handicraft Artisans' Co-operative Society (AWAS) has appointed seven members as new board of directors during an election held on Friday at Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen, Palace Compound, here.
According to AWAS managing director Thangjam Singhajit, the election for appointment of new board of directors for the society was conducted as per directive of the registrar of cooperative society with timely notification.
After the end of the election, Singhajit told media persons that eight contestants had on Thursday lodged a complaint for deferring the election in view of the prevailing flood situation and the same was placed before cooperative registrar in time.
The election was held according to the norms of the society as higher officials made no call for deferring the election, he said.
Meanwhile, one of the contestants in the election namely Ph Indira said that the election for board of directors of AWAS held on Friday cannot be valid.
She said that eight out of 15 contestants in the election lodged a complaint to relevant official for deferring the election in view of the flood situation in different parts of the state.
However, the election was held on the same day the government declared public holiday due to flood, she said and termed the forcible conduct of the election as very unfortunate.
