The Department of Art and Culture and Manipur Nat Sankirtan Apunba jointly observed the Sankirtan Day at Sri Sri Ramji Prabhu Mandap.
Ningthem Pukhri Mapal on Wednesday.
The observance was attended by Manipur Nat Sankirtan Apunba.
president and Sangeet Natak Akademi awardee Leimapokpam Lakpati Singh as chief guest and Art & Culture Department commissioner M Joy as president.
In his speech, M Joy said that everyone has a role to play in the preservation and popularisation of Sankirtan which plays a crucial role in all aspects of the society.
He then appreciated (late) Guru RK Singhajit who along with renowned filmmaker Aribam Syam Sharma played a crucial role in seeing to the inclusion of Nat Sankirtan in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) List.
He also informed that efforts are currently on to have Lai Haraoba included in the said list.
Art & Culture director K Dinamani, who also attended the observance, said that the Manipuri Nat Sankirtan is different from other states and stressed the need for including the same in school syllabi.
He then informed that with the approval of appointment of Sankirtan teacher in Government Dance College, the session for this art form will begin from next year onwards.
