Shija Hospitals & Research Institute (SHRI) organised an awareness programme on Indian Organ Donation Day at its Langol auditorium on Saturday.
The event was attended by Dr Nongthombam Saratchandra Singh, former professor and head of the Anatomy Department, Shija Academy of Health Sciences (SAHS); Monica Laishram, programme manager of MOHAN Foundation; Dr Palin Khundongbam, CMD, SHRI; and Joythandra M, president of Body Organ Donors Association, Manipur (BODAM) as presidium members.
Over 100 people including students and faculty from Shija Academy, as well as nurses and support staff from Shija Hospitals and members of BODAM participated in the programme.
A key focus of the presidium members was to raise awareness about organ donation.
They talkd about the need to educate public about brain stem death, encouraging deceased organ donation, combating unethical organ transplantation, addressing misconceptions about organ donation, opening tissue bank, and encouraging hospitals to identify and report cases of brain stem death.
The 14th Indian Organ Donation Day was observed nationwide, highlighting that one organ donor can save up to eight lives.
The programme aimed to promote organ donation and bridge the gap between those needing transplants and available donors.
A total of 114 kidney transplants were performed at Shija Hospitals as of June 2024, including two kidney transplants from Myanmar and seven from Nagaland.
It was the first hospital in north-eastern India to perform an ABO-incompatible transplant and conducted the first deceased kidney transplant in the region on August 2, 2023 .
With a full-time Nephrologist and Urologists, SHRI provides high-quality, patient-centric care and performs the highest number of haemodialysis in the entire northeast region, with 120 dialysis sessions per day in its 42-bed dialysis unit.
Shija Hospitals has conducted 94,180 CMHT and 72,560 PMJAY dialysis sessions, demonstrating its dedication to patient care, a press release by assistant general manager L Premjit Singh conveyed.
