Imphal, June 01 2024:
Many residents of Wangoi AC, who are facing flood due to breach of Nambul river bank, blamed bad road for the disaster and strongly believed that the flash flood could had been averted if there was good road to transport flood control materials till the river banks.
Vast tracts of paddy fields and many fish farms in Samurou area of Wangoi AC remain under water after the Nambul river bank breached at Samurou Maning Pebam Maning Loukol at around 8.30pm on May 29.Local people tried to mend the weak river bank well before the disaster happened but all their efforts became futile as vehicles carrying flood control materials could not reached river banks in time.
Vehicles carrying flood control materials were unable to ply on the muddy road of Nambul river bank thereby causing a herculean task for the locals to man the breached site.
Nevertheless, local MLA Kh Loken personally inspected the area and brought one JCB, which widened the road and enable vehicles to ply on the road at ease.
With the collective efforts of locals, officials of water resources department and Arambai Tengol volunteers, the breached spot was mended within three days, a local named Sandham Romesh of Samurou Makha Leikai informed.
When The People's Chronicle visited the breached site on Saturday, three weak spots nearby the breached site of Nambul river bank were detected and locals were able to mend the weak spots in time.
On the other hand, black-topping of the road along Nambul river bank from Wangoi to Mutum Phibou by MLA Kh Loken recently managed to prevent flood in the area as good road facilitates transportation of flood control materials like bamboo, bamboo sheets and earth till the river bank in time.
