Sit-ins appeal for sparing education sector

Mass sit-in appeals organised in connection with 19th Disturbance-Free Education Zone Demand Day under the initiative of Coordinating Committee on Disturbance Free Education Zone continued unabated at schools and colleges on Friday.
Speaking in this regard, DESAM secretary general and Committee member N Thoithoiba regretted that teachers could not teach students diligently owing to threats to school and college authorities and further appealed to make education a free zone.
The exorbitant monetary demand on schools, college and educational institutes by armed groups has been impacting the academic atmosphere, he added.
Demanding the government to frame policy for uplift of education in the state, he appealed for effective implementation of the policies already in place for strengthening the education sector.
Moreover, CSOs and student organisations should not drag in students as and when there is any issue, he emphasised while urging organisations to refrain from insisting on quota for admission.
Among others, the sit-in appeals were carried out at Naorem Birahari College, Cosmopolitan High School, Kanan Devi Memorial School; Bright Career Academy, Tampha Quality Academy, KC High School, Ram School, Pari Imom Khwai Sidam Shang, Gatewell School, Hundred Flower Higher Secondary School, Paramount School, Success School (Khurai), Lamlong Higher Secondary School, North Eastern English School, Mega Manipur School, Maria Montessori School, Kings School, Reliance Academy, Srivan Higher Secondary School, Liberal College, Campus English School, Christ Jyoti, Tiny Tots Unique School, St Thomas High School, St Anthony School, Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Imphal Valley Academy, Sangai Higher Secondary School, Central Academy, EK Higher Secondary School, Manipur Public School, Heingang Higher Secondary School, Public School, Sacred Heart School, Thambalnu High School and Antarctica English School in Imphal East district.
During the protests, students and teachers also raised slogans against excessive monetary demands on educational institutions, politicising education by the government, and proposed framing of law to ensure academic period not less than 220 days, implement guidelines in timely manner, check corruption, nepotism or favouritism in education, and no to any interference in education.
