Imphal, January 25 2025:
Deputy Commissioner of Tamenglong district has issued a prohibition order following reports of alleged poisoning of the Barak River near the Nheng-Mpa Fish Reserve area during the New Year holidays, which led to the death of a large number of fishes, some measuring up to two feet.
The incident has raised concerns over the health risks posed by the collection and sale of these poisoned fishes.
As per the order, the public is prohibited from fishing, buying, or consuming any fishes - whether fresh, dried, or smoked - collected from the Barak River in and around the affected area until an investigation is completed.
The selling of fishes from the location is also strictly banned with immediate effect.
Invoking Section 6 of the Manipur Fishery Rules, 1998, the DC reiterated the prohibition on using poisonous substances, including insecticides, weedicides, noxious chemicals, and explosives, for fishing.
The discharge of chemical or industrial effluents into the water, particularly in government fisheries, is also strictly forbidden.
The order emphasised the need to protect aquatic resources and promote sustainable fishing practices.
Violators of the prohibition order will face prosecution under the Manipur Fishery Rules, 1998, and will be punished as per its provisions, the order added.
