Students advised to pursue foreign language course

While highlighting that learning a foreign language course is now considered an important skill development course, Manipur University vice chancellor Professor Naorem Lokendra said students can enhance prospects in their future professional careers by pursing foreign language course.
Speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural function of a five-year MA Integrated Japanese Language course in the Department of Foreign Language, Manipur University, at the Court Hall of the varsity on Thursday, Prof Lokendra informed that the Department of Foreign Language was sanctioned for Japanese and Korean languages at the time of the 11th plan of UGC.
At present, the Department has six faculty and efforts are underway to appoint competent candidates for the remaining faculty positions.
He continued that the central government started the Department in view of the increasing importance of eastern Asia.
In addition, the relationship between Manipur and Japan began during the Second World War, wherein around 40,000 Japanese soldiers lost their lives in Manipur at the hands of the Allied Forces.
After Manipur attained statehood, the Indo-Japanese Society set up a memorial for the slain Japanese soldiers in Maibam Lotpa Ching, Lokendra recalled.
Later, under the aegis of this Society, efforts for learning Japanese language were made.
At present, the five-year integrated MA course is now launched in MU, he stated and exuded hope that Japan will extend the necessary support to the initiative.
He then said that the first batch of this course is extremely lucky and as such, urged the students to avail the full benefits of this course.
The inaugural function was attended by MU registrar Prof W Chandbabu as special guest and Department of Foreign Languages head Prof S Imoba as president.
Japan Foundation director general Sato Koji and Japanese Language advisor Yoshikawa Keiko attended function via online as guests of honour.
