Moreh, September 24 2024:
Expressing serious concern over the effects of global warming in the state caused by deforestation for poppy plantations, Meetei Council Moreh president Mayanglambam Thoiba Meitei, has urged the state government to launch tree plantation drive in the deforested hills.
Speaking to the media, Thoiba opined that in case authorities concerned initiate tree plantation drives in the hills denuded for poppy cultivation, it could lead to positive environmental changes.
He noted that the state is experiencing significant rise in temperature due to drastic changes in climatic conditions with the people facing serious problem of water shortage.
Given these environmental challenges and the problems stemming from extensive poppy cultivation in the hills, the forest department has begun tree planting initiatives in various parts of the state, he noted while adding that state government needs to expand these efforts to the hilly regions.
With proper planning and security cover, tree plantation drives in areas affected by poppy cultivation could foster a healthier and eco-friendly environment for the community, Thoiba proposed.
