Imphal, June 17 2025:
In connection with the International Day for Biological Diversity 2025, Manipur University Department of Zoology in association with Babina Healthcare and Hospitality Industries Private Ltd; Biodiversity, Ecology and Environment Network Manipur (BeeNet Manipur) and others organised one-day 'Discourse on Biodiversity Conservation' and Prize Distribution with the slogan 'Unwind the Mirror: The Loktak Lake' at Inland Water Transport Complex Hall, Sendra on Tuesday.
Prior to the discourse, MSc 2nd semester students of Department of Zoology conducted a cleanliness drive along the approach road to Sendra.
The programme was attended by DM University former vice chancellor professor N Rajmuhon Singh, Babina Healthcare and Hospitality Industries chairman and managing director Dr Th Dhabali Singh, and Department of Zoology head professor Th Binoy Singh as presidium members.
Delivering the keynote address, Department of Zoology professor N Mohilal Meitei stated that formal observance of the International Day for Biological Diversity, which falls on May 22, was delayed due to unavoidable circumstances, though a biodiversity park was inaugurated at MU by vice chancellor professor N Lokendra on the same day.
Stating that Loktak mirrors overall condition of biodiversity in the state, he also observed that biodiversity conservation efforts necessitate involvement of indigenous stakeholders, public, government and entrepreneurs.
As resource person of the discourse, BeeNet Manipur secretary S Bhubon Singh highlighted that forests are reservoir of water, food and air and if protected everything could be sustained.
Emphasising that development should be properly monitored, he stated that present generation has borrowed the environment from future generation and should ensure that it is passed on to them without any damage.
Bhubon also appealed all to become an environmentalist for two-three minutes every day with students leading the way by starting with small conservation measures.
Stressing the need for the collective effort between the hill and valley people in protecting fragile biodiversity, he asserted that degradation of environment in hills will only lead to loss of sustainability in valley, as it evident from small streams originating in hills creating the Loktak Lake.
The event concluded with distribution of cash prizes and certificates to winners of the spot photography competition held on May 17 in connection with the International Day for Biological Diversity 2025 .
