"Manipur can take lead in silk production"

A week-long trainers' training programme on sericulture jointly organised by Central Silk Board, Bangalore and department of sericulture, commenced from Monday at Hotel Nir mala, Thangal Keithel, here.
Speaking as chief guest of the inaugural function, Central Silk Board director (technical) Dr BT Srinivas informed that India has surpassed China in silk production.
While stating that there are four types of silk - Mulberry, Eri, Muga and Tasar raw silk, with Karnataka the leading state in terms of silk production, the director acknowledged that Manipur has its own unique spot in the silk map by being the only state to produce all the four types of silks.
As such, Manipur can take the lead in the silk production, he said.
Dr Srinivas further said that the training pro gramme for technical officers of sericulture de partment will give a new impetus in silk production in the state and urged farmers of the state to avail benefits of the various schemes under Central Silk Board in order to boost production and improve their economy.
Central Silk Board senior scientist Dr Siddique Ali Ahmed, sericulture director Bidyarani Ayekpam, head of Regional Sericulture, Imphal Dr Devraj, Central Silk Board retired senior scientist Dr NI Singh, sericulture deputy director K Kachui and senior officials of the department attended the programme.
In her speech, Bidyarani Ayekpam expressed that the training programme being organised under the funding of North East Region Textiles Promotion Scheme will help in enhancing the knowledge of the department's technical officers and other staff.
They will also be provided hands on training on preparation of closure reports for various schemes and detailed project reports after assessing the state specific requirements during the weeklong training, she added.
