Martyrdom of Arambam Somorendro recalled

Arambam Somorendro Memorial Trust and Social Standard Club, Khurai Nandeibam Leikai jointly observed the 24th Lamyanba Arambam Somorendro martyrdom at Khurai Nandeibam Leikai memorial complex on Monday.
The event marked by a 2-minute observance of silence and offering of floral tributes to the photo of the martyr was attended by UNLF former chairman RK Sanayaima, Pambei-led UNLF acting chairman M Nongyai, general secretary Ch Thanil, secretary (Fi-nance-l) Tonsana, secretary (HRD) S Tamphajao, secretary (Operation and Economic Affairs) S Pank-hei, chairman (army welfare) H Tomnou and representatives of various CSOs, women groups and student bodies.
Speaking on the occasion, Social Standard Club vice president Ase'm Indo Meitei remembered Arambam Somorendro as a multifaceted individual who dedicated his life for a self-reliant Manipur.
His untimely demise was a huge setback and profound loss for Manipur, the vice president said while calling upon the present generation to thoroughly contemplate ideals of Somorendro and strive to realise his vision for a progressive Manipur.
Similar observance was also organised by Patriotic Writer's Forum, Manipur at Nungshikol Park in Lamlai where participants offered floral tributes to the statue of Somorendro.
Delivering the keynote address, Forum secretary Rakesh Naorem described Somorendro as a visionary with deep devotion to his homeland.
He was a pioneer leader who introduced the concept of nationalism in> Manipur following Lamyanba Hijam Irabot.
Tragically, he was shot dead by an unknown assailant while delivering a speech at an event on this day in 2000 .
The observance has been conducted annually to make the people and the young generation in particular aware about his ideas, he added.
The tribute event was also attended by writer Chana Lukhoi, Forum vice president P Biprachand and Biramangol College Manipuri Department head Dr laishram Landhoni as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
Participants from Bangladesh also took part in the observance.
