Imphal, May 08 2024:
An Independent Approach Control ATS unit was inaugurated by Imphal International Airport director Chipemni Keishing at the Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower situated within the Air Traffic Service (ATS) building at the Airport, on Wednesday.
Speaking to reporters in this regard, Air Traffic Management (ATM) joint general manager Subrata Halder, who is also the ATS in-charge, described as historic moment that the Independent Approach Control ATS Unit has been opened at Imphal International Airport.
The unit is the third of its kind in the entire north east region, following Assam and Agartala.
He further said that previously, the Approach Control and Aerodrome Control at the Imphal Tower were managed through a single channel.
This meant that the tower controlled aircraft within a 25-mile radius and up to a height of 20,000 feet.
With approximately 40 flights landing at the airport daily, managing both controls posed challenges.
Therefore, with approval from the Airports Authority of India Central Headquarters, the tower has been divided into separate Approach Control and Aerodrome Control units.
This will not only reduce the workload for air traffic controllers and minimise frequency congestion, but also enhance passenger safety and provide ease for pilots.
Additionally, construction for the new Terminal building and ATC tower at Imphal International Airport has commenced and is scheduled for completion by June 2025 .
