Man denies going missing after filing NHRC case

Imphal, April 08 2023: One Manglenlal Haokip has denied that he had gone missing after filing a complaint to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) against All Manipur Youth Protection Committee (AMYPCO) and others including the chief minister, as reported in some local media few days back based on Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC)!s order on the case.

In a statement issued to the media on Saturday, Manglenlal recounted that he had lodged a complaint with the NHRC against AMYPCO for its defamatory statements stereotyping all Kukis of Manipur as illegal immigrants which was published in the March 15 edition of local newspapers and similar defamation by others including the CM.

"I received calls from NHRC to check my email in which everything is mentioned.

But I could not view the status of my case through the link given in my email every time I was informed by the Commission.

I was not informed about any hearing date or summon through telephone or email or post, "Manglenlal continued that he was planning on raising his grievances about his inability to check the status of the case but the order of the MHRC made ex-parte as reported in local papers was a surprise for him before he could approach the Commission again.

"I would like to clarify for all concerned that I am not 'missing' after filing the case as reported in some media reports.

I was very well prepared to prove prima facie the particulars of the case and prove all the allegations of defamation and incitement of communal hatred made and it is highly regrettable that there was a communication gap with the NHRC" .

"If the accused apologises to all indigenous Kukis and is forgiven by the victims, I may withdraw my case.

But, if there is no apology, I would be compelled to approach the courts as advised by the NHRC on charges of criminal defamation and incitement of communal hatred for which imprisonment and/or fine/ disqualification from legislative post and candidature, etc., may be the penalty, for the sake of peace, love and sanity in Manipur," he further conveyed.
