MCPCR visits Akampat, calls for strict action

A team of Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MCPCR) along with the staff of District Child Protection Unit (DCPU), Imphal East visited the spot near Akampat relief camp where police fired tear gas shells to disperse a protest on Thursday.
According to a press release, the Commission stated that evidences have been found of the police failing to restrain from firing tear gas and mock bombs near a school area with the students present in the school campus, observing precautions in consideration of the school premises and following proper guidelines in the matter.
The incident is both terrifying and traumatising, not to mention threaten to life of the students and mentally harassing them into a panic state, which is a serious concern.
As such, the authority concerned must take strict action to prevent a repeat of such incidents in the future, it demanded.
The Commission continued that of the 800 students enrolled in pre-primary to Class X at Eastern Ideal High School, Akampat, 140 students were present in the school on Thursday.
The number of students was low as the post-examination holiday had just begun.
Many of the students panicked after hearing gun shots and inhaling fumes of the tear gas shells, and fainted.
The teachers promptly provided the necessary first aid and tried their level best to take care of the students.
The students were impacted by the aftereffects of tear gas shells which exploded at a distance of 14 metres.
A Class V girl student from Okram Chuthek was affected the most seriously and taken to Little Clinic Hospital.
She was later discharged to her family after her health improved.
Meanwhile, some students of S Chaoba Memorial English School (SCM) also fainted and had to be hospitalised.
Among the hospitalised included a Class VI girl student displaced from Churachandpur and currently staying in a relief camp, and another Class VI girl student from Singjamei Kshetri Leikai.
There are also reports of other students who were distressed and undergoing treatment in their respective homes, the Commission noted.
