NDMA team reviews disaster preparedness

A central team of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), led by director (finance) Rakesh Kataria, visited Chandel district on Wednesday to inspect and review the district's disaster preparedness and management activities.
The team, accompanied by Chandel deputy commissioner and district level officers (DLOs), held a review meeting on ongoing initiatives and later visited several locations for on-the-spot assessment.
According to Rakesh Kataria, the team arrived as per the directive of Ministry of Home Affairs to evaluate the functioning of disaster management authorities at both state and district levels.
He said objective of the visit is to examine how authorities are preparing for mitigating disaster risks, as well as to understand the response mechanisms in place in case of disaster.
Further stating that the team will interact with the local authorities for better understanding of their expectations from the central government and the State Disaster Management Authority, Rakesh said the NDMA team will assess level of coordination among line departments and review functioning of emergency operations centres to ensure that effective disaster response systems are in place.
The review meeting held at the Mini Secretariat conference hall of the DC Office, Chandel was attended by NDMA under-secretary Chandal Singh, senior consultant Dr Sweta Baidya, Chandel DC Laishram Nandakumar, ADC Md Firoz Khan, Relief and Disaster Management director Kajaigai Gangmei, Relief and Disaster Manage ment, Chandel consultant Philakan Kingdang, coordinator Md Riyazul Haque, SDOs of Khengjoy and Chakpikarong, and other DLOs .
