The designated officer (food safety and administration), Thoubal, has issued a directive to all Food Business Operators (FBOs.) operating in Thoubal district to strictly comply with the Food Safe ty and Standards Act (FSS) 2006, Rules and Regulations 2011, as the State braces for the upcoming Diwali and Ningol Chakkouba festivals.
The FSS Act, designed to establish science-based food standards, mandates the regulation of food manufacture, storage, distribution, sale, and import to ensure the availability of safe and wholesome food for public consumption.
A circular issued in this regard on Monday instructed all FBOs, including retailers, wholesalers, eateries, hotels, cafes, restaurants, sweet shops, and meat and fish vendors, to adhere to the prescribed guidelines, while warning that any violations would invite strict legal actions under the FSS Act, 2006 .
It also informed that the department will carry out inspections- and special drives at any time to ensure compliance with the FSSAI guidelines.
"FBOs are required to cooperate fully with the officers conducting these checks," the department said, cautioning that any attempt to obstruct or impersonate a food safety officer may result in imprisonment for up to three months and a fine of up to one lakh rupees under Section 62 of the FSS Act.
The directive also prohibited sale, storage, or distribution of any tobacco products containing nicotine, in line with a recent notification issued by the chief secretary and state food safety commissioner on October 18 .
