Dr Ranjan urges diligent service by food safety officers

Health and Family Welfare minister Dr Sapam Ranjan Singh has called upon food safety officers to work with diligence and dedication in order to ensure safety of the public.
The minister made the appeal in his address as chief guest of the 'Global Iodine Deficiency Disorder Prevention Day' observance jointly organised by National Iodine Deficiency Disorder Control Programme (NIDDCP), National Health Mission (NHM), Manipur and Directorate of Health Services, Manipur at Hotel Imphal on Monday.
Dr Ranjan stated that consumption of iodised salt can help prevent various health disorders.
"Awareness and quality check of edible salts available in the market is a necessary step to prevent iodine deficiency disorder," he noted, adding that Thyroid disorder is common in iodine deficiency.
The minister continued that the role of food safety officers is vital in ensuring quality of food items available at the markets.
Stressing bn the need for routine inspection of all types of food items, he suggested that consumable and non-consumable items be properly classified.
Dr Ranjan also called for coordinating efforts among the officials working in the health sector and advised food safety officials and staff to discharge their duties with sincerity and strictness in this regard.
The observance was also attended by special secretary (health & family welfare) Hungyo Worshang, director (health services) Dr O Sanahanbi Devi, NHM Manipur state mission director Dr M Dinesh Singh, officials and staff of health department and NHM, nursing students among others.
Earlier, an awareness booklet about the Iodine Deficiency Disorders and its preventive measures was also released.
