Imphal, April 17 2025: The Festival of Art and Cultural Expression (Series 1: Theatre) organised by Art & Culture Department commenced on Wednesday, though formal opening ceremony of the festival to be held till April 29 at five locations in the state, was held on Thursday at Maharaj Chandrakirti auditorium, Palace Compound.

The opening ceremony of the festival organised under the financial assistance of Chief Ministergi Artistsinggi Tengbang (CMAT), 2023-24 was attended by Sangeet Na-tak Akademi awardee Sabitri Heisnam as chief guest and commissioner (Art & Culture) M Joy as president.

Addressing the gathering, Sabitri said that while it is impossible for humans to live without money in the contemporary world, artistes do not step into their profession solely for money.

"Sustaining art and theatre without proper sustenance will be challenging but those in these professions need to work hard with dedication," she said, expressing her profound gratitude to the state government for initiating schemes for promotion of artistes.

In his speech, M Joy said that all the theatre groups which will showcase their plays during the 14-day festival have already availed financial assistance under CMAT, 2023-24 along with informing that total of 41 plays will be showcased during the festival at the five locations.
