Showroom of handloom products opened at Porompat

Imphal, January 15 2025:
A display cum showroom and mini conference hall for Mega Handloom Cluster, Imphal East constructed under National Handloom Development Programme at the complex of District Handloom & Textiles, Imphal East, Porompat has been inaugurated on Wednesday.
Principal secretary (textiles, commerce & industries) Arun Kumar Sinha, who inaugurated the display cum showroom and mini conference hall, said that handloom and handicraft products of Manipur have unique designs and quality and accordingly are much-sought items in other states and abroad.
He urged weavers/ artisans of the state to upgrade their part-time job to full-time profession so as to meet demands of the people while reiterating that the government is striving to aid weavers/artisans double their earning.

He also expressed hope that the newly opened display cum showroom will enable weavers/artisans to showcase and sale their products.
Director (handloom & textiles) K Lamlee Kamei also attended the event and said that the newly constructed mini conference will help weavers/artisans of rural areas to share their designs, rectification and other issues with experts through video conferencing.
He urged weavers/artisans to make new and attractive designs so as to meet the demands from national and international markets.
Manipur Handloom & Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited E Jeeten said that state handloom directorate and the corporation have been taking up different programmes including exploring markets for handloom/ handicrafts items of the state.
Even though hand loom/handicrafts items of Manipur have high demand at national and international markets, there is problem in marketing due to high pricing.
In view of this, chief minister N Biren Singh launched Yarn scheme to provide yarn to weavers at cheaper rate, he said and urged weavers to stop the habit of selling their products at high price.
There is high demand for state handloom/ handicraft products in Dubai but weavers/artisans are unable to supply their products to Dubai due to high transportation charge.
However, this problem could be eased if government bear the transportation charge and the corporation will approach state government for extending logistic support.
Ifthis becomes reality, han-dloom/handicraft products of the state could be sold at Dubai at local price, E Jeeten added.
The event was also attended by Weaver Service Centre, Porompat office in-charge Priyadarshi Daripa, Punjab National Bank lead divisional manager Yengkhom Abochou, Manipur Handloom & Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited general manager Th Basanta and Imphal East Handloom & Textiles project manager (handloom) Y Ashalata and other officers and staff of the corporation, designers and weavers.
