Imphal, November 14 2024:
Amid widespread condemnation against the recent escalation of violence and abduction of six women and children from Jiribam, several organisations have joined the chorus of appeal to the abductors for immediate and unconditional release of the captive women and children.
In separate releases, Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW), Houston-based Association of Meiteis in the Americas, London-based European Manipuri Association, All Assam Manipuri Students' Union (AAM-SU) Central Committee, Kom Union Manipur (KUM), Kanglei People's Confederation (KPC) and Indigenous Development Mission (IDM) voiced collective demand for immediate and unconditional release of the six, including three minors.
They demanded decisive actions from the chief minister for the safe rescue of all victims, as well as direct intervention from the Prime Minister and Home Minister to ensure the protection of civilian lives.
They further called for a thorough investigation into the incident and book the perpetrators, apart from enhancing security measures to prevent further attacks on vulnerable populations.
The organisations described the prevailing situation as 'deeply disturbing', while pointing to the unwarranted tribulations that civilians, especially women and children, continue to endure amid ongoing unrest.
Asserting that women and children must be protected under all circumstances and should never be used as instruments in conflicts, they pointed out that the principle transcends any political or ethnic differences, as the security and welfare of the most vulnerable members of society reflect the collective humanity of a region.
The organisations reiterated that targeted attacks against defenceless women and children represent a grave violation of human rights and fundamental humanitarian principles, adding that such acts constitute potential war crimes and demand immediate attention.
In Jiribam district, candlelight vigils were held simultaneously across the district on Thursday, urging for release of the six women and children abducted on November 11 from Borobekra sub-division by Kuki militants.
In a candlelight vigil organised by Jiri United Committee (JUC) with support of Youth of Jiribam, near the Irawat statue, the participants chanted slogans such as 'Kuki terrorist should release the six innocent abductees'; 'We condemn subjugation of women, children'; 'We want justice'; 'Indolent local MLA should resign'; 'Relinquish office if government can't protect citizens'; etc.
Similar demonstrations were also staged in different parts of the district with the denizens holding candles in front of their houses.
