Imphal, February 10 2025:
BJP should sort out differences among the party legislators and appoint a consensus leader to form a new government in the wake of resignation of chief minister N Biren Singh as it would not be right to have President's Rule amid the unrest situation in the state, suggested veteran politician Okram Joy Singh.
In an exclusive interview after chief minister N Biren Singh resigned suddenly, Joy told The People's Chronicle that it would not be a right step to bring President's Rule in the state at present.
Rift among BJP legislators is open now after the resignation of N Biren but party leaderships must sort out the differences and elect a new consensus leader to form a new government so as to fulfil the five-year term of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly.
He said that the Governor summoned 7th session of 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly form February 10 as per constitutional provisions to conduct at least one session in six months or else assembly will be considered no longer active automatically.
However, there seems to be plan by the BJP leaderships including Manipur-in-charge Sambit Patra to appoint a new leader and form a new government.
Taking into account such acts of BJP central leaderships, there is high suspicion of putting state assembly under animated suspension or impose President's Rule, he opined.
According to Joy, the Governor advised N Biren to remain as caretaker chief minister till bringing alternative arrangement but there will be no assembly if such situation continues.
As the 6th session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly ended on August 12, 2024, the assembly will remain active if a new chief minister takes oath and Governor addressed the assembly by February 12.There is also possibility of keeping the state assembly under animated suspension while it is still active and appoint a new consensus leader for forming a new government.
Otherwise, it is quite sure that the state will be under President's Rule, O Joy said.
