Imphal, March 07 2025:
On occasion of International Women's Day, which falls on March 8, the Coordination Committee (CorCom) extended greetings to all the women of Manipur (Kangleipak).
CorCom, the conglomerate of revolutionary groups operating in Manipur and WESEA region, also honoured women across the world for their role and contributions in preserving culture and society and enhancing economy and administration.
According to a CorCom statement, International Women's Day will be observed on the global theme 'Accelerate Action' this year emphasising the urgent need to take decisive steps towards achieving gender equality.
But, how far 'Accelerate Action' relates and fit with the present status of women in Manipur need to be discussed.
In fact, this year's theme seems to be contradictory to ongoing movement for women's rights in Manipur (Kangleipak) as women continue to be suppressed and their unity torn apart and destroyed particularly by those in power by using various means.
When women gathered at the residences of elected representatives and asked them to perform their bounden duties, they have to confront women entrapped by the so-called representatives and such incidents have become common in Manipur (Kangleipak) nowadays while many pseudo-women leaders are engaged for guarding and protecting properties of pseudo-leaders.
As such, the underlying meaning and thoughts behind 'accelerate action for gender equality' need to be discussed and efforts made for uniting the women, the CorCom said and stressed the need for introspecting lifestyles of contemporary women of Manipur and challenges they faced.
According to the CorCom statement, women of Manipur (Kangleipak) fought the then colonial British in the first Nupi Lan of 1904 though the idea of observing international women's day originated in Europe in 1908.The women of Manipur again fought the colonial rulers in the second Nupi Lan of 1939.However, the Meira Paibi movement from 1980s till date confronting suppressive policies of India is the most important.
Both the Nupi Lan and the present Meira Paibi movement are all against colonial administration.
These movements signify that women of Manipur (Kangleipak) were and are ahead of their global counterparts while the continuing Meira Paibi movement showcases the righteousness of women's movement in the land.
Women of Manipur prioritise fighting colonial rulers than tackling their own issues and this make them significantly different from movements in other parts of the globe, the CorCom said.
