Bishnupur, June 01 2024:
The incessant rainfall over the past few days in the state has raised the water levels of almost all the rivers in Bishnupur district, resulting in the inundation of around 500 'pari' of crop land and destruction to fish farms, as well as flooding many houses.
The heavy rainfall breached the bank of Thongjaorok River, which flows between Kwasiphai and Khoijuman, at three locations leading to destruction of crops and vegetables in Khoijuman and Kwasiphai areas, which are known for producing crops in bulk.
The rain water also submerged 300 'pari' of cropland in Kwasiphai and another 200 pari in the Khoijuman area.
The damaged crops include pumpkin, zucchini, gourd, ladies finger, green chilli, kidney bean, carrot, cucumber, tomato, water melon, etc.
A farmer of Kwasiphai reported that planting vegetables on one pari of land generally generates income of Rs 10-12 lakh.
However, the rainfall has flooded and destroyed all the vegetables.
As farmers are certain to lose all their known sources of income, authorities concerned should visit the affected areas and implement necessary measures to assist the farmers, he urged.
Around 70 houses on the southern end of Ngaikhong Gandhi Bazar and 30 houses in Ngaikhong Awang Leikai have also been inundated due to overflow of the Thabakhong stream, destroying fish farms and other structures.
Additionally, the banks of Kha Potshangbam River breached at two points, resulting in inundation of numerous houses, damage of crops and fish farms in Nachou Kha Leikai.
Residents contended that government s failure to implement flood control measures before the rainy season is the primary cause for occurrence of flash-flood in the valley areas every year.
